Teacher can ask students to say something about their favorite commentator. Play the tape for the first time. Check the answer. Activity 3 requires students to listen for specific words.

T: Now look at the words listed in Activity 3. We will listen to Part 2 of the passage. Check the words you hear. As you may have found, the words on the first line are all in –ed form, while those on the second line are all in –ing form. So pay attention to this while listening. Play the tape. Check the answer.

Activity 4 requires students to listen and check the true sentences. Activity 5 requires students to explain the 5 sentences from the listening materials in their own words. This activity will help students to form the habit of thinking in English.

Step I Revision

T: First of all, let’s check the answers to Activity 11-12 on workbook. Check the answers.

Step II Lead-in

After checking the answers to Activity 11-12, introduce the text. T: What did we learn yesterday? Ss: Basketball and the NBA.

T: Today we are going to meet two great NBA players. Look at the pictures please. Who are they?


S: The first one is Michael Jordan, but I am not familiar with the second. S: I know. The second one is Wilt Chamberlain. He is a great basketball player. T: Yes, you are right. I know some of you are basketball fans. Can you tell me something about them? Such as the name of their team, their height, their nicknames and so on.

S: Michael Jordan is known as “Air Jordan”. He was born in 1963 in Brooklyn, NY. He is the greatest basketball player of all time.

S: Wilt Chamberlain is one of only two players who have scored more than 30,000 points in an NBA career. He was basketball’s unstoppable force, the most awesome offensive force the game has ever seen. …

T: It seems some of you don’t know much about them. In this lesson, we’re going to learn something about the two great basketball players. Turn to Page 2 please.

Step III Reading

First ask students to look through the two profiles and then answer the questions in Activity 1. Three minutes later check the answers with the whole class. Suggested answers: 1.1. No, they didn’t.

1.2. Chamberlain was 19cm taller than Jordan. 1.3. Chamberlain scored more points in his career. 1.4. He was 63 years old.

1.5. They both hold the record consecutive seasons leading score: 7. Reading

T: OK. Let’s continue with the introduction of Michael Jordan and Wilt Chamberlain. First read the two passages quickly and then answer the questions in Activity 2.You


may work in groups and discuss the questions together. Suggested answers:

2.1. He played for the Chicago Bulls.

After dealing with Activity 3, ask students to work in groups and discuss which player they like better.

T: Up to now, you have learned something about the two great players. Which player do you like better and why? Work in groups and have discussion.

Five minutes later ask a group of students to present their discussion to the rest of the class.

A sample of the discussion:

A: I like Michael Jordan better not only because he was a top score player in the NBA, but also a successful actor.

B. Me, too. I admire his athlete ability, motivation and confidence. Many people remember his famous number 23 shirt. Thanks to him, the Bulls won their NBA championship and the Dream Team won the gold medal at the 1992 Olympics in Barcelona, Spain.

C. It is true Michael Jordan was the best known athlete in the world in the 1990s, but he was only the second player to score more than 3,000points in a season. The first was Wilt Chamberlain. I like Chamberlain better. He is the only NBA player who averaged over 50 points per game for an entire season. On 2nd March1962, he


scored 100 points in a single game—no one has ever done that since! D. I quite agree. What’ more, Chamberlain was so much better than all the other players that they changed the rules of the game to try to stop him.

T: I think it is hard to say who is better. Both of them are great. Both of them deserve the title “outstanding player of the generation.”

Step IV Explanation

During this procedure, play the tape for students. Students will underline the difficult sentences. After listening to the tape, Teacher will explain the text and deal with language problems.

T: Now we will deal with some difficult language focuses. Now I will play the tape for you. Please make a mark where you have difficulties.

After listening to the tape, explain the difficult sentences to students. Before explaining the difficult points, students are asked to refer to the notes to the text. T: Do you have any difficulties with the text?

T: Ok, let’s come to the vocabulary exercises. You are given five minutes to do the exercises. Then you may check the answers with your group members.

Deal with Activity 4-5. Activity 4-5 are about words and phrases from the two passages. Students are required to use them freely. Check the answers.
